INFORMATION REGARDING NAEGLERIA FOWLERI INFECTIONS AND PREVENTION

In light of recent incidents of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) fatalities caused by Naegleria fowleri infections, we understand that you may be facing an influx of inquiries and concerns at your facilities. We acknowledge that while these instances are extremely rare, their impact on families, friends, and communities can be devastating.

Here is some information that may help alleviate concerns should you receive an inquiry:
• Properly cleaned, maintained, and disinfected swimming pools do not pose a risk of N. fowleri infection.
• From 1962 to 2008 only 5 out of 100 cases are associated with hot springs (all believed to be primitive or unmanaged)
• N. fowleri infections are rare. In the United States, between zero and five cases were diagnosed annually from 2013 to 2022, totaling only 29 infections during this period.
• Despite the rarity of infections, preventive measures include avoiding activities that may lead to water entering the nose in warm fresh water bodies, using nose clips, and keeping the head above water.

Additional resources have been added to the Documents Library should you need them. Resources include editable graphics that show the states where infections have been more common, a chart demonstrating the small percentage of cases linked to hot springs, a list of useful and easy to reference information, a list of additional reference materials and a press release.
